Over 80 U.S. Muslim organizations to join MPower Change's
National Muslim Voter Registration Day to boost turnout in
key states ahead of November's midterms
Weeks before a crucial midterm election determines the balance of power in Washington D.C., community organizations and mosques across the country are joining a coordinated effort to register Muslim voters as part of National Muslim Voter Registration Day, a non-partisan voter registration effort led by MPower Change, taking place on Friday, Sept. 18.
Voter registration tabling and GOTV events will be held in more than 15 states, including: New York, New Jersey, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, California, Tennessee, Georgia, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. An estimated 8 million Muslims live in the U.S., with more than 2.5 million registered to vote in states with consequential federal and local races.
“It has been a historic year for our community at the ballot box – from helping to elect New York City’s first Muslim mayor to other Muslim candidates poised to make history,” said Linda Sarsour, executive director of MPower Action Fund. “This didn’t happen overnight. We began this work 10 years ago, and now we are building on this momentum across the country, especially in states like Michigan and Florida where the stakes are so high.”
National Muslim Voter Registration Day was launched by MPower Change in 2018 as part of the #MyMuslimVote campaign to activate and mobilize Muslim American voters during each election cycle. To date, thousands of Muslim voters have been registered to vote as part of the campaign.
“At a time when voting rights are under attack, National Muslim Voter Registration Day reminds us that our communities will not retreat from the civic space we have worked so hard to build,” said Ahmet Selim Tekelioglu, executive director of CAIR-Pennsylvania. “We will show up, register, vote, and make our voices heard—not only as voters, but as Americans committed to shaping the future of our communities and our country.”
